Service sector grows 0.6% and indicates signs of recovery

IBGE

Research shows that sector has grown for the second consecutive month. Services provided to families, transportation and tourism were highlighted

Driven by services to families, transportation and tourism, the services sector grew by 0.6% between November and December last year. With this result, the segment registers the second consecutive increase. The data are from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and were released on Wednesday (15).

Positive performances in the last two months of the year, however, were not enough to reverse losses recorded in the course of 2016, which closed in the red, down 5%.

Despite the negative result of the year, data from November and December indicate that the sector may have entered a recovery path. The heaviest branches in services registered significant advances in the last month of 2016.

Services to households increased 2% compared to November. This result was possible with observed increases in housing and food services (+ 2.3%) and other services provided to households (+ 1.4%).

Transportation and tourism

Other blue lines included visual audio services (+ 0.3%), technical services (+ 0.8%), land transport (+ 3.2%), air transport (+ 4.9%), warehousing (+ 0.3%) and tourist activities (3.1%).
