Retail sales up in May, says IBGE

Resume

Sales volume of retail trade grew 4.5% compared to the same period last year, according to IBGE

After 38 months of decline, retail sales increased again as the economic scenario improved. In May, retail sales volume grew 4.5% compared to the same period last year, according to data released on Wednesday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)

The expanded retail trade includes activities of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and construction material. In the restricted segment, retail sales also recorded good results and increased 2.4% in May, compared to the same period last year.

In this case, the sale of furniture and appliances grew 13.8% and was the main positive impact on the result. According to IBGE, this increase is explained by the commemoration of Mother's Day and also by the fall in interest rates.

"In the month of celebration of Mother's Day, the dynamics of sales of this segment in May 2017 may be associated with the reduction of the interest rate on individuals and the recomposition of the mass of real income usually received," the agency explained.

Textile, clothing and footwear sales increased 5% in May, compared to the same month of the previous year, and accounted for the second largest positive contribution to the overall retail index.
