Industry activity registers best August in seven years, says IBGE

Industrial production increased by 4% compared to August 2016, with recovery in 20 of the 26 evaluated branches

With the resumption of the economy, domestic industry activity continues to grow. In August, industrial production increased by 4% compared to the same period last year, the best result for the month on this comparison basis since 2010, when the variation was 8.5%.

After four consecutive months of growth, industrial production registered a slight deceleration of 0.8% in August. The data were released on Tuesday (3), by the Brazilian Institute Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

As a result, industrial activity accumulated a 1.5% increase this year. In the last 12 months, the indicator went from a negative result of 9.5% in July last year to a decline of only 0.1% last month. 

According to the survey, 20 of the 26 surveyed sectors had advances in the month. Among the main results are those of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (+ 28.2%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (+ 22.1%), tobacco products (+ 63.0%), (+ 14.2%) and furniture (+ 12%).

In August, the major economic categories were up in comparison with the same month of 2016. The main growth was recorded in the production  of durable consumer goods, with an increase of 18.5%, followed by capital goods, with a high of 9, 1% and, finally, the intermediate goods segment, with a 2% increase.
